You know the statistics: Almost two-thirds of executive women have seen “the scope of their management responsibilities unexpectedly changed or expanded due to the events of the past 16 months while they also cared for children (and) aging parents" (KPMG), while 91% of Massachusetts employers “report significant concern about childcare and school issues adversely impacting employee engagement and productivity” (MBCECE). Perhaps most importantly, childcare complications during the pandemic pushed back progress in women’s careers by nearly 10 years (WSJ).

If all this data is true and proven, we must ask: why haven’t we solved the childcare problem that is so essential to women and the organizations that employ them?

At The Boston Club, we are a force for change in advancing women’s leadership, and are proud to be the among the few executive women’s organizations acting as partners to the Massachusetts Business Coalition for Early Childhood Education to bring women’s voices to the tables that matter.

Please join us for a discussion about how this issue impacts you and what you can do. Whether you are an executive who has faced these challenges personally, or you lead an organization where results and bottom line are impacted, there are ways for you, your organization or colleagues to get involved.

Tom Weber, Foundation Fellow and Executive Director, Massachusetts Business Coalition for Early Childhood Education
Tom, a Lynn, MA native, joined the Eastern Bank Foundation as a Foundation Fellow in 2019 and transitioned into his current role as Executive Director of the Massachusetts Business Coalition for Early Childhood Education in 2021. He is determined to make early childhood education more accessible, affordable and stable for working families, more rewarding for early childhood professionals, and a point of differentiation in attracting and retaining a strong workforce across the Commonwealth.  Prior to his current role, Tom was the longest-serving Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care. During his tenure, the Department expanded services for eligible families in need, which included advancing higher program quality and increased workforce supports, the successful application for $60 million in federal funding to support free, high-quality preschool in five communities, and the implementation of the Commonwealth's $50 million Federal Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge Grant, which supported numerous program quality improvement initiatives.
